Acupuncture works is not a single event, magic bullet. It works because it is process-oriented and designed to heal your entire being. Those who respond well to acupuncture have usually made a commitment to a course of treatment, over a period of time.
It is most beneficial to fit your expectations for feeling better into this realistic model, rather than expect an instant fix the first time you receive this type of treatment. You can expect, though, to have the practitioner's full attention for the entirety of your session, partly due to training, but also due to working independently and seeing only one client at a time.
How many acupuncture treatments might typically be needed?
This varies by the severity, duration and intensity of the condition, and overall health of the person. Here are a few possible scenarios, based on whether the condition is acute or chronic.
-
- Acute Injury & Pain Relief - 1 to 6 treatments. A smaller number of treatments spaced close together (i.e. every day/every other day for 4 to 6 treatments).
- Long-standing / Chronic Condition & Pain: 8 to 12 treatments close together. A longer course of care with treatments spaced initially at 2 times per week, then tapering down to 1 time per week, then 1 time every other week, over 3 to 4 months.
- Maintenance or Wellness Care: 1 to 2 treatments per month ongoing
